A short video introduction (60–90 seconds)
Introduce yourself in a video, ideally from the location where you would work remotely. Tell us about yourself and why this role interests you.
Please note:
- VolunteerLocal provides computer equipment for employees, so it is fine to use your phone or your current computer/camera setup. We are not looking for an overly produced video.
- You can use any video service that allows us to view the video. A common approach is to use YouTube and set the video’s visibility to “Unlisted.”

Thanks for moving forward. This exercise helps us understand how you write and think through an unfamiliar audience.
The exercise:
Write an explanation of Daylight Saving Time, addressed to a curious 7-year-old. The child knows what clocks are, knows what bedtime feels like, and has noticed that sometimes it stays light outside later than other times. They've just asked why grown-ups change the clocks twice a year, and they want a real answer (not "because we just do"). Your job is to explain it to them, including some of the complications it causes.
A few notes on what we're looking for:
- Clarity over comprehensiveness. We're more interested in how you communicate with an unfamiliar audience than in how thoroughly you cover every historical detail of DST.
- Your voice matters. Write in your own style. Please don't outsource this to AI tools — we're looking for how you think and write.
- Proactive thinking helps. If you spot something the child might be confused by, address it. We notice.
Submission requirements
Please follow these carefully:
- Format: Save your response as a PDF.
- Filename: Name the file DST_LastName_FirstName.pdf (for example, DST_Smith_Jamie.pdf).
- Length: Your response should be between 250 and 350 words.

We want to understand your judgment about when AI is the right tool and when it isn't.

After you submit this form, you can make edits or updates until applications close. If anything isn’t quite right, you’ll have a short window to go back and adjust it.
A note on our process: we are accepting applications on a rolling basis, which means there is no application deadline, and we are reviewing candidates as they come in. We will follow up if your application is a strong match for the role, but our timeline may be longer than typical hiring cycles.
Thank you!
